***THE TARGET BREACH AND YOUR DEBIT CARD***
The Target Corporation has confirmed a massive card data breach that affects 40 million consumers who shopped at a Target store and paid by credit or debit card (which includes the Target issued REDcard VISA) from November 27, 2013 to December 15, 2013.
The type of data stolen, also known as "track data", allows crooks to create counterfeit cards by encoding the information onto any card with a magnetic stripe.
Instead of just monitoring your accounts waiting to see if fraud will occur, the Bank believes that stopping potential fraud before it has a chance to happen is the best approach. Therefore, if you used your bank issued VISA Debit Card at a Target store during the specified dates, your card(s) should be cancelled immediately!
The Bank will waive the $5.00 replacement card fee for 30 days or until January 20, 2014.
If you used a Target issued REDcard VISA at a Target store during the specified dates, which is also tied directly to your checking account, you should contact Target immediately and cancel the card.
Target reported that there is no evidence of Personal Identification Number (PIN) information stolen and that their online site was not affected by the breach.
It is always a good idea to monitor your accounts on a regular basis. If fraud is discovered, please notify the Bank immediately!
